History of Christ’s Chapel of God’s Gift at Dulwich

Christ’s Chapel was consecrated in 1616 by George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury, as the centre of Alleyn’s College in Dulwich.

The Elizabethan actor-manager and entrepreneur Edward Alleyn (1566-1626) built his College of God’s Gift (comprising chapel, school and almshouses) on Dulwich Green as an act of thanksgiving to God for his talents as an actor and his ability in business. Since then it has been in use continually as a place of public worship and for the Dulwich Schools of the Foundation and Dulwich Almshouse.

Music at Christ’s Chapel

Music at Chapel services is led by two choirs. Dulwich College Choir sing Evensong frequently in term time. On the first Sunday of the month a small dedicated choir sings Choral Matins and then Choral Evensong on the remaining Sundays. They are directed by the Chapel organist. There are regular organ recitals throughout the year.

Dulwich College Choir sings around 30 services per year. Originally formed in 1626, the College Choir was re-formed in 1998 in honour of Dulwich College’s Founder, Edward Alleyn, who wanted to create a choral foundation at Dulwich like the Chapel Royal and the Choir of Westminster Abbey. The Choir consists of Dulwich College’s current Choral Scholars who range from trebles in the Junior School to altos, tenors and basses from the Senior School. Students from JAGS join for regular Evensong services.
